Continuous and discontinuous grain boundary wetting in the zinc–aluminum system.

Russia / Россия

Temperature dependences of the contact angle between grain boundaries (GBs) in Al- and the Zn-rich melt; GBs in Zn and the Al-rich melt; tilt GBs in Zn and the Al-based solid solution were measured. Contact angle decreases with increasing T in all cases and reaches zero (complete wetting) at a certain temperature Tw. The wetting transformation for Al GBs is discontinuous (first order). The wetting transformation for Zn GBs is continuous (second order).
